Do you think God might be calling you to get involved in Life Teen? Perhaps you’ve heard about the programme or someone you know has suggested you find out more. Maybe working with youth is one of the things God has in store for your life right now – you can certainly learn a lot and can really grow in your relationship with Him through ministry with young people.
Serving on the Life Teen core team involves quite a lot of responsibilities and a huge amount of fun and fulfillment!
Our role as core team is really to help the teens to encounter and fall in love with Jesus. Don’t worry, He does most of the work! Each of us helps by facilitating and participating in the life nights and by praying for and being there for the teens.
A very special aspect of the Life Teen programme is the relationships it fosters. As a core team member, you will be expected to get to know the teens, and to form trusting, Christ-centred friendships – especially with those in your small sharing group. This is a commitment that goes beyond the duration of the life night each week. Absolutely essential is that you pray for the teens. Core team members should also develop and maintain connections with individual teens. Everyone who attends life teen should feel that we, as the core team, know them and care about them.
To serve on the Life Teen core, you must be confirmed in the Catholic Church, but you are certainly not expected to know all the answers! One of the greatest benefits to the core group is how much we ourselves learn along the way. Because we receive a detailed outline for each life night, including all the content required, all we need to do is prepare well, execute the plan and, most importantly, love and pray for the teens.
It’s crucial that we set an example for the teens by the way we are and the way we live, but that doesn’t mean we have to be perfect – the best example you can give is the authentic witness of someone who sometimes sins and struggles in your faith, but who loves the Lord and His Church and always tries to be the best you He has created you to be. The beautiful thing is that through being on the core team, by praying, by serving God and by discovering more about Him, your relationship with the Lord is growing all the time.
Everyone has something they can contribute to the Life Teen programme, whether it’s creativity, wisdom, enthusiasm, time, experience, skills in organizing, in public speaking, or in music… as long as you are willing to give of yourself, the Lord will use you. And whilst serving on the core team may require that you commit a lot of yourself and your time, there is no greater source of joy than being used by God, especially in drawing young people to Himself.
Our first advice to anyone who is considering serving on the life teen core is obviously to pray. Maybe spend some time in Adoration with Jesus and see if He leads you one way or another. Make a time to speak to a priest about it – they are always willing to listen and they give great advice!
Something else that might help you to discern is to come visit us! Anyone is welcome to join us in the catechetical centre from 6.30 to 7.30pm every Monday evening, a time in which we have our own spiritual formation. It’s a great way to meet the people involved and chat to them about what it’s like. Perhaps you’d like to come to a life night, or help out in a small way to start off – chat to one of the youth ministers and they’ll guide you (come see us in person or send us a message).
If you’re one of those people that wants to know in detail what they’re getting into before signing up for something then this page will give you more detail about what we cover in the programme. One thing you should probably know up front is that, while we love having people come from all different Christian denominations and even those still deciding if they want to be Christian, the programme is authentically and beautifully Catholic.
Contrary to what some popular misconceptions about the Catholic faith say, being authentically Catholic does not mean telling you to believe something because we “say so” or because “that’s just the way it is”. Rather we’ll present the faith in an intuitive and understandable way that will make you fall in love with Jesus. While God does want us to be faithful to Him despite not fully understanding absolutely everything, He does also give us mental intelligence to contemplate and reason through things. This is the journey you need to set out on if you’re serious about getting to know God and yourself. Blessed Pope John Paul II explained this beautifully when he wrote that: “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth – in a word, to know himself – so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.”
Ok, so let’s get down to the nuts and bolts of the programme! As mentioned in the home page the programme covers the Catechism of the Catholic Church is a 4 year cycle. We don’t mean literally word for word, but rather the content necessary for the proper instruction of candidates in preparation to make their Confirmation. The topics are each run for about half a year before moving onto the next topic. The 8 semester plan is as follows: Sacred Scripture; Person of Christ; Paschal Mystery; Church; Sacraments; Morality; Social Justice; and, Vocation.
During each semester we also throw in a whole bunch of extra stuff address issues people face in the real world like drug and substance abuse, depression and suicide, forming life-giving friendships, sexual purity, what it means to be pro-life and tons more. Every night has it’s fun times, but we’ll try mix things up each semester with 1 or 2 social nights where we mainly spend time getting to know each other and having a good time together.
I hope that gives you a better understanding of what sort of things we cover in the programme, but if you want to know even more then please email us or come chat to one of the youth ministers in person.
“We love because He first loved us.” 1 Jn 4:19
As imitators of Christ’s love we welcome anyone (in high school) who wants to come to our Life Nights. It doesn’t matter if you just want to come once to see what it’s about or if you’re thinking of making it a regular thing; if you’re another Christian denomination and want to see what Catholicism is about; or if you’re just coming with your friend because they’re going and you’re staying at their house for the weekend – we’d love to see you all!
